The Gatwick Airport Draft Master Plan of 2018 included details of a 3-runway airport in addition to Heathrow expansion; it was not just about using the emergency runway in conjunction with the main runway.
The three scenarios:
Runway 1 – the main runway is to be used with modern (satnav) flight
technology to increase capacity meaning more planes in a concentrated format with 60m passengers;
Runway 2 – to use the emergency runway, in conjunction with
the main runway, will increase flights by 10-15 an hour adding 70m passengers to the roads and single railway line;
Runway 3 – Safeguarding the land for a brand new 3rd runway would add 95m passengers to infrastructure.
Airports can bring economic benefits – by way of direct employment, improved communication and dependent business opportunities.
There are many areas of the UK that would benefit from such an economic stimulus, but not necessarily Sussex and Surrey.
